Jim Davidson
Jim Davidson is an accomplished high-altitude climber, motivational speaker, and author.
Along with his teammates, he’s been commended twice by the U. S. National Park Service for volunteering on remote and risky mountain rescues.
Jim has inspired audiences across the US and internationally through Speaking of Adventure, his business.
The Ledge: An Adventure Story of Friendship and Survival on Mount Rainier is about how in June of 1992 when Jim and his best friend Mike Price stood triumphantly atop Washington’s Mount Rainier, celebrating what they had hoped would be the first of many milestones in their lives as passionate young mountaineers. But instead, their conquest gave way to catastrophe when this cave in plunged them deep into a glacial crevasse, the ice-walled and pitch-black hell that every climber’s nightmares are made of.
Jim, an avid adventurer from an early age, was a seasoned climber already, fully aware of all the risks and hopelessly in love with such a challenge. However in the blur of this harrowing free fall, he all of a sudden found himself being challenged by nature’s grandeur at its most unforgiving.
Trapped on this unstable and narrow ledge, deep below the daylight and high above this yawning chasm, he would desperately battle crumbling snow and ice which threatened to bury him alive, as he struggled in vain to save his fatally injured companion.
The Next Everest: Surviving the Mountain’s Deadliest Day and Finding the Resilience to Climb Again is a dramatic account of the deadly earthquake on Everest and a return to reach the summit.
April 25, 2015 was the day Jim was climbing up Mount Everest as a 7.8 magnitude earthquake released avalanches around him and his team, destroying their one escape route and trapping them at almost 20,000 feet. It was the biggest earthquake Nepal had seen in 81 years, and it killed 8,900 people. That same day also became the deadliest event in Everest history, with 18 people dying on the mountain.
After spending 2 unsettling being stranded on Everest, they got rescued by helicopter. The experience left him shaken, and despite 33 years of climbing by that point in time and serving as an expedition leader, he was unsure that he’d ever return. However in the face of uncertainty and risk, he went back in 2017 and achieved his dream of reaching the summit finally.
Engrossing and suspenseful, this book depicts the experience of living through the largest disaster to hit the mountain. His background in environmental science and geology makes him uniquely qualified to explain how such a natural disaster unfolded and why the seismic threats lurking under Nepal are even worse today.
