He is best known for his role on
Supernaturalas Bobby Singer. He also played Whitney Elsworth on Deadwood, which brought him acclaim as well as a Screen Actors Guild Awards nomination for Ensemble Acting. Jim also played Lawson, a gun dealer, on both

Breaking Bad.
While in college, he expressed little interest in an acting career, however he immersed himself in film history and expressed a desire for a writing career, publishing a few short stories in his high school anthology.
Jim made his professional stage acting debut in October of 1972, while he was still a college student, in Rain, from W. Somerset Maugham’s short story at the Oklahoma Theatre Center in Oklahoma City. After he returned to Texas, he performed extensively in local theatre in the Dallas area, and supported himself by working as a film cleaner at this 16 mm film rental firm and as a stage hand for the Dallas Ballet.
Jim joined the Shakespeare Festival of Dallas in 1976, performing in a number of productions. In 1979, he was commissioned to write the first of three plays for the company, and was twice a finalist in the theatre’s national Great American Play Contest.
For his script for Alfred Hitchock Presents, he received a 1987 CableACE Award for his very first TV script for the show.
He heavily researched a biography of the actor George Reeves (who played Superman on
Adventures of Superman) between acting roles for a number of years.
He married fellow actor Cecily Adams in 1989 and their daughter was born in 2001. They were married until she died at the age of 46 in 2004.
Life’s That Wayis a remarkable memoir which shows the human heart’s capacity to heal after the challenge of having to say goodbye. Even the toughest of lessons can contain great gifts.
Jim Beaver and Cecily Adams (his wife) seemed to have it all, after years of fertility treatments, they were parents finally and had been building their dream home and successful Hollywood careers. Life was good. Then Maddie, their daughter, was diagnosed autistic. Then his non smoking wife was diagnosed with Stage IV lung cancer. He became a single dad and widower after 14 years of marriage.
Jim, faced with overwhelming grief, reached out to friends and family by writing a nightly email, this habit that he established when Cecily had first been diagnosed. Initially just a cathartic exercise for him, the prose became this unforgettable journey for his readers. This is a compilation of those compelling and profound emails.
