Jessica Grose

Jessica Grose (Jessica Ebenstein Grose) was born in New York City, USA.

Jessica Grose is best known as a journalist, novelist, and editor. Since 2021, she has been writing in the opinion section of The New York Times.

She was brought up in Irvington, NY, to Richard M. Grose, the cardiologist and photographer, and psychiatrist Judith Ebenstein Grose.

Growing up, Jessica Grose used to nerd out on Mirabella, Sassy, and Entertainment Weekly, among other glossy magazines that ruled the 90s. She started writing for her high school paper and was soon promoted to editor.

A few years down the line, she began editing the independent weekly The Indy. Back then, she believed she was meant to pursue a career as a rock music critic and culture commentator. Out of college, she realized she had to broaden her scope to cover a range of subjects to earn a living.

Grose has since worked for a range of prestigious publications, including Jezebel, New York Magazine, and Slate. She has developed a reputation for her fresh angles and deep dives into culture, family, education, and religion.

In 2018, Jessica Grose was appointed editor of the Times parenting section before she moved to the Opinion section three years later.

In 2012, Jessica Grose published her first standalone novel titled Sad Desk Salad, in which she tells the story of blogger Alex Lyons, who is in charge of celebrity gossip at a popular website.

Lyons works long hours chasing scandals and clicks to keep her bosses happy. When she is tipped off about a politician’s daughter, she puts it out first. However, the scandal causes chaos and harm, and the journalist's life begins to unravel as she beats herself up for being so rash.

It is a work that shows the cruelty of online media, even as it asks where the line is between hurting others and the truth.

Four years later, Jessica Grose published Soulmates, which follows the life and times of a lawyer named Dana as she tries to put her past behind her after a nasty divorce. Ethan, her former husband, had left her to join a spiritual yoga group in search of peace.

But then Ethan is found dead in a cave with his new partner, and some people think it was murder suicide, but Dana does not buy it. Digging into his past, she unearths a dark, messy, and strange truth.

The more she learns, the more she realizes that nothing about their marriage was what she thought it was.

It is a work that combines satire and mystery, demonstrating how the pursuit of meaning can sometimes leave people even more lost.

In 2022, Jessica Grose published the nonfiction work Screaming on the Inside, in which she explores the challenges of modern motherhood.

She draws from interviews with women and her own research to show that more often than not, society expects mothers to be perfect online, at home, and at work, which is just impossible, and that it results in many mothers feeling overwhelmed, guilty, and tired.

The work explains how the pandemic and social media worsened the situation, arguing that the system is negative and too demanding of mothers.
