With each one of Jenny Colgan’s books, you feel like you personally know the residents in the towns in her novels. These books she writes are about community and the connections people have with each other, and yes, just a bit of romance. You quickly find that you want to go and visit Nina’s mobile library, have a bit of Polly’s fresh baked bread, and walk upon the shore of Mure Island with Flora and her family.
You become deep with these people, and truly feel like friends. These are the characters I turn to when the world gets just a bit too loud and it is time to embrace some calm.
Three reasons made me a Jenny Colgan fan. First of all, she wrote for Doctor Who, which is my favorite show of all time, or at least one of them. That one achievement makes her a star in my book.
Secondly, she wrote a series of books about books (Scottish Bookshop). Her character was a literary matchmaker who spent her days finding the right books for the right readers. Is that a real job? I don’t know. But it sounds amazing.
Third, she writes feel-good books. In a world that seems to grow harsher with each passing day, Jenny’s soothing stories are a breath of fresh air.
