Jeffrey E. Garten
Jeffrey E. Garten was born on October 29th, 1946 and is currently 79 years old. Garten attended Dartmouth College where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree and Johns Hopkins University where he received a Master of Arts degree and a PhD.
Jeffrey E. Garten is best known as a policy expert, global business teacher, and leader who is an expert in international markets, finance, and government.
Since 2005, he has been at the Yale School of Management as a senior professor teaching courses on crisis leadership, international business, and global finance.
Jeffrey E. Garten’s classes often take students beyond the classroom with studies on the leadership of companies during major disasters and normal times, travel, China’s role in the world economy, and major financial centers.
Before Garten went back to full-time teaching, he spent a decade at the Yale School of Management, where he expanded the school’s global reach, faculty, and programs. He also established new centers focused on non-profit leadership, finance, venture funding, and corporate governance.
Besides his work in academia, Jeffrey E. Garten is the co-founder of the global consulting firm Garten Rothkopf, which consults with organizations and companies on major changes in the world. He helps leaders understand how global debt, policy decisions, environmental pressures, and economic strain affect long-term planning and business strategy.
Jeffrey E. Garten has served on the boards of nonprofit organizations and major corporations in addition to holding senior roles in finance and government. He worked on global trade negotiations between Europe, China, and the US, in addition to working on debt restructuring and international banking on Wall Street.
Jeffrey E. Garten published his debut work,
A Cold Peace, in 1992.
In the book, he looks at how the US had to deal with strong economic rivals in Germany and Japan following the Cold War. According to Garten, these countries grew in power due to their history and unique systems, even if the US played a role in their rebuilding following the Second World War.
He demonstrates the changing rules across the globe, which meant that the US could no longer lead on its own. As such, the United States had to understand their different strategies and the shifting world economy rather than blaming Germany and Japan for trade problems.
In 2016, Garten published
From Silk to Silicon, in which he explains the rise of globalization over several centuries, as he examines the growth of finance, trade, exploration, and technology.
He explores figures such as Genghis Khan, who facilitated trade routes across Asia and Europe, the building of global banking through Mayer Rothschild, the expansion of free trade under Margaret Thatcher, and the kick-starting of global communications by Cyrus Field.
He shows how the individuals helped shape the modern world as they helped connect people, economies, and countries.
Five Years later, Jeffrey E. Garten published
Three Days at Camp David, as he tells of how a secret meeting changed the entire money system of the world.
Nixon and his advisors put an end to the gold standard, thus allowing the dollar to float freely as the country was running out of gold.
The abandonment of the gold standard resulted in more unpredictable markets, even though it helped grow investment and trade across the globe. It also helped many countries grow into what they are today.
