Jagmeet Singh

Jagmeet Singh (Jagmeet Singh Jimmy Dhaliwal) was born on January 2nd, 1979 and is currently 46 years old. Jagmeet Singh was born in Scarborough, Ontario, Canada. Singh attended the University of Western Ontario where he received a Bachelor of Science in biology and York University's Osgoode Hall Law School where he received a Bachelor of Laws degree.

Jagmeet Singh is a Canadian politician who in 2017 was elected to be the leader of the New Democratic Party. He started sitting as the member of Parliament for Burnaby South in 2019.

Jagmeet worked as a criminal defense attorney in the Greater Toronto Area before he entered into politics, first at Pinofskys, and then at his own practice, Singh Law, which he established with Gurratan (his brother). He stated that his background in criminal defense contributed greatly to his decision to enter into politics, especially his work advocating for the protection of rights entrenched in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

He started his political career with his decision to run for a member of Parliament in 2011 federal election as the NDP candidate in the riding of Bramalea—Gore—Malton. During this election, he stopped using his Dhaliwal surname, which is connected to caste, since he wanted to signal his rejection to the inequality inherent in the caste system. So instead, he decided to use the more common Singh. Even though he got defeated by Bal Gosal (the conservative candidate) by 539 votes, he finished further ahead of Gurbax Singh Malhi (the incumbent Liberal MP).

Love & Courage: My Story of Family, Resilience, and Overcoming the Unexpected is a heartfelt and personal tale about overcoming adversity and family.

In October of 2017, he was elected as the visible minority to lead a major federal political party in Canada. It was a historical milestone celebrated all around the nation.

Just a month prior, in the election’s lead up, he held community meet-and-greets all around Canada. At an event, one disruptive heckler hurled accusations at him. He responded by asking all Canadians to act with “bravery and love” in the face of hate. This response went viral immediately, and folks around the country started asking who this man was. And why “bravery and love”?

This heartfelt and personal memoir is his answer to that question. Throughout, we’re invited to walk with him through childhood up to his adulthood while he learns moving, powerful, and sometimes traumatic lessons about addiction, hardship, and the impact of not belonging. We meet his strong family, including his mom, who teaches him that “we’re all one because we’re all connected”, which is a valuable lesson which has shaped who he is to this day.

This memoir isn’t a political memoir. It’s a story about love, bravery, and family, and how strengthening the connection between us all is the way to building a better world.
