Jacob D'Ancona

Jacob D’Ancona is the alleged author of the work The City of Light. The work tells the story of a man who visited China several years before Marco Polo, having traveled on a ship from Italy to China during the 13th century.

The original story was written in vernacular Italian and was supposedly found in 1990. It was then translated and edited by David Selbourne, the British scholar, who then went on to publish the work in 1997.

Nonetheless, scholars have questioned the authenticity of the manuscript. Many assert that since the original document has never been found, and there are linguistic anachronisms and inconsistencies in historical detail, the genuineness of the work remains in question.

Some scholars have pointed to the use of concepts and terms that were not in common use in the 13th century, which they believe suggests the text is of modern origin. Other critics have asserted that critiques and philosophical arguments are very similar to Selbourne’s views.

Despite the controversy, the work has been translated into several languages even as debate continues about its authenticity among literary scholars and historians.

In The City of Light, Jacob D’Ancona, a Jewish merchant and scholar, sets out in 1270 and heads out of Italy, heading to the city of light named Zaitun, a vast coastal city in the south of China.

The manuscript he wrote about his experiences in China during the 13th century remained hidden for hundreds of years. He describes an economy that is highly developed with lavish consumption and robust manufacturing, even as the Mongols threaten to invade.

He tells of a surprisingly modern, decadent, and wealthy society in which he participated as a foreign trader. He also participated in philosophical and cultural debates of the time, and these debates provide insights into the relationships between Christians and Jews and what is expected of the individual in society.
