J. Bradford DeLong

J. Bradford DeLong (James Bradford DeLong) was born on June 24th, 1960 and is currently 66 years old. J. Bradford DeLong was born in Boston, MA, USA. DeLong attended Harvard University where he received a BA in Social Studies, MA and a PhD in Economics.

J. Bradford DeLong is known for writing in the Non-Fiction genre.

J. Bradford DeLong is a well-respected economics professor and economic historian who has been teaching at the University of California since 1993.

Brought up in Washington, D.C., he developed a love for science and mathematics from a very early age. As an adult, he went on to teach at Harvard, Boston University, and MIT before he became a John Olin Fellow working for the National Bureau of Economic Research.

Between 1993 and 1995, J. Bradford DeLong served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Treasury under President Clinton. In his role in formulating Economic Policy, he contributed to the Uruguay Round, NAFTA, the federal budget of 1993, and reforms in healthcare.

Back in academia, DeLong rose to the rank of full professor at Berkeley, where he teaches finance, economic history, economic growth, and macroeconomics.

He is also a co-editor of The Economists’ Voice, the Journal of Economic Perspectives, in addition to having a fellowship at the Institute for New Economic Thinking.
As an academic, he is renowned for his work helping students and the public understand post-war growth patterns, the Great Depression, behavioural finance, and technological revolutions. He is also a blogger who writes a column about economic policy for Project Syndicate.

He makes his home in Berkeley, where he lives with Ann Marie Marciarille, his wife. He continues to be a significant figure in promoting economic understanding through public engagement, research, and teaching.

In 2011, J. Bradford DeLong published the work Slouching Towards Utopia, in which he details the rapid technological advances that resulted in unprecedented material wealth and economic growth between 1870 and 2010.

In the work, DeLong demonstrates how humans have managed to overcome the poverty that had plagued them for centuries, but this has ultimately led to rising inequality, economic crises, and climate change.

He argues that instead of creating a utopia, growth resulted in a rejection of the status quo and discontent. He demonstrates that the last 100 centuries were not a linear path to progress but an uncertain and slow movement toward a better, albeit still flawed, world.

Four years later, Bradford DeLong published the work Concrete Economics, as he asserts that economic growth can be achieved not through ideology but through historical fact.

They show how the government has been actively trying to energize and shape the economy since the time of Alexander Hamilton. From the early manufacturers to the tech giants of Silicon Valley, most growth has been driven by public policy.

It is a work that challenges the long-held myths of the free market economy and reminds its audience that prosperity is a result of hands-on and innovative governance.
