Isabella Beeton
Isabella Beeton (Isabella Mary Mayson) was born on March 12th, 1836. Isabella passed away February 6th, 1865 at 28 years old. Isabella Beeton was born in Marylebone, London, England.
Isabella Beeton was an English journalist, writer, and editor. Her name is especially associated with her first book,
Mrs. Beeton’s Book of Household Management. It sold 60,000 copies in its first year. The original version contained 1,112 pages, with 900 focusing just on recipes. The rest provided advice on child care, fashion, and poison.
The book reflected Victorian values, especially thrift, hard work, and cleanliness. It reflected this optimistic message that mid-Victorian England was full of opportunities for those that were willing to learn how to best take advantage of them.
She started a relationship with Samuel Beeton in about 1854. They entered into extensive correspondence in 1855, in which Isabella would sign her notes as Fatty and they later announced their engagement in June of 1855. They married in July of 1856. Samuel was a discreet yet firm believer in the equality of women, and theirs was an equal partnership both on a professional and personal level.
Less than a year after marrying Samuel Orchart Beeton, she started writing for one of his publications:
The Englishwoman’s Domestic Magazine. She wrote the cookery column and translated French fiction into English.
She died at the age of 28 of puerperal fever. She gave birth to 4 children, 2 of which died during their infancy, and had numerous miscarriages.
Mrs. Beeton’s Book of Household Management: the 1861 Classic with Advice on Cooking, Cleaning, Childrearing, Entertaining, and More was originally published as 24 newspaper columns from 1859 to 1861, and is at first a guide to managing a household. Today it’s a fascinating glimpse at the past and is a guide to some forgotten skills which can be used to this day.
Running an extravagant household was quite the monumental task and was a responsibility not to be taken lightly. This meant supervising all the employees, from the laundry-maid to the butler to the wet nurse and the footman. This meant managing the happiness, safety, well-being, and comfort of the family.
