During his childhood, he worked with his parents at their market business in Seattle and learned about consumer-oriented retail business and everything about management and operations. As an adult, he would make his name as one of the three leaders who built the Starbucks brand into what it is today.
For more than two decades, Howard Behar was President of Starbucks' North American business before he became the founding president of its international arm during which he opened the first store in Japan. While he was president, he led the company on an expansion drive from 28 stores in the US to more than 15000 on more than 5 continents.
Behar served on the Board of Directors of Starbucks for a dozen years before he retired. Over the years, he has served on the boards of several non-profit and for-profit organizations such as Gonzaga University, Education Element, iD Tech, the University of Washington Foundation, and Anthos Capital. He is also a Sheri and Les Builler Family Foundation Trustee.
Howard Behar is known for his advocacy of the
Servant Leadership Model to educate and develop future leaders. Outside of his writings, he travels the world speaking to students, corporations, and leaders. He currently makes his home in Seattle Washington, where he lives with Lynn his wife, and their children.
