Howard Behar

Howard Behar is best known as a renowned speaker, author, business leader, and mentor of men and women at various levels and roles and different stages of their careers. He is also known as a former president of Starbucks the coffee chain where he achieved much success.

During his childhood, he worked with his parents at their market business in Seattle and learned about consumer-oriented retail business and everything about management and operations. As an adult, he would make his name as one of the three leaders who built the Starbucks brand into what it is today.

For more than two decades, Howard Behar was President of Starbucks' North American business before he became the founding president of its international arm during which he opened the first store in Japan. While he was president, he led the company on an expansion drive from 28 stores in the US to more than 15000 on more than 5 continents.

Behar served on the Board of Directors of Starbucks for a dozen years before he retired. Over the years, he has served on the boards of several non-profit and for-profit organizations such as Gonzaga University, Education Element, iD Tech, the University of Washington Foundation, and Anthos Capital. He is also a Sheri and Les Builler Family Foundation Trustee.

Howard Behar is known for his advocacy of the Servant Leadership Model to educate and develop future leaders. Outside of his writings, he travels the world speaking to students, corporations, and leaders. He currently makes his home in Seattle Washington, where he lives with Lynn his wife, and their children.

In 2005, Howard Behar published It's Not About the Coffee, a book about how he effectively led his teams at Starbucks. He tells of how he managed his roles from executive vice president of sales to president, including the strategies he employed to get the best of his employees and colleagues. While he shares many of the soft skills he employed, he also shares anecdotes from his time working at Starbucks.

In 2016, Howard Behar published The Magic Cup, which tells the story of the newly named CEO of a glassworks company named Vince Steadfast.

Hired to revive the ailing company he comes with a stunning crystal coffee cup that was a gift from his former boss and mentor. It turns out the cup is magical and it is instrumental in helping him understand and bring back the values the company had lost over the years.
