Horace Greasley
Horace Greasley was born on December 25th, 1918. Horace passed away February 4th, 2010 at 91 years old. Horace Greasley was born in Ibstock, Leicestershire, England.
Horace Greasley was a soldier in the British Army captured by the German Wehrmacht in 1940 and became famous for his claims that he escaped from his camps and returned over 200 times for a clandestine love affair.
Do the Birds Still Sing in Hell? is a testament to Horace Greasley’s mates who survived the Second World War with him and the ones who never made it. It’s a story about love, fear, danger, and hope, and is filled with heroes you will love to get to know.
Horace was shipped to France at the start of the Second World War. As soon as he arrived there, he was captured by the German army. He spent the rest of the war as a prisoner in camps. But Horace wasn’t your ordinary soldier; he was very stubborn, got beaten often and made friends who would protect him and save his life on more than one occasion. He was a man full of himself, but did some heroic acts even during his captivity.
Then, there’s Rosa Rauchbach, the daughter of a Quarry owner who acted as interpreter between her father and the prisoners. Horace and Rosa soon fell in love, and they’d always find ways to meet in private. First, it was at the camp’s workshop and later out in the forest.
Rosa was beautiful, kind and generous. She often helped Horace to feed his friends and supplied him with radio parts. Their relationship put many people’s lives in danger, but despite this, they kept seeing each other. Even when Horace and his friends were taken to another camp, Rosa followed, and Horace would successfully sneak out at night again and again to meet her.
The tales of those who lived through the Second World War are so important because they give us a glimpse into what life was really like and the harsh times they endured. Horace’s story is an extremely interesting read. Very few people would endure what he did and witness sights meant for no eyes at all, and through all these challenges, he never stopped thinking about others and went above and beyond to help his campmates and friends.
Horace’s story contains strong graphic language, sex and violence. No matter what the story does for you, there is no doubt that it offers a unique glimpse into the horrors experienced by thousands of prisoners of war, something that we all should understand in the wake of wars and global conflicts.
