The Light Hearted Soldier.
In this work, Peppard tells of his experiences in the
First Special Service Force, an elite but small Canadian American outfit trained to undertake commando-style operations to relieve pressure on Russia during the Second World War. The unit fought with distinction in the South of France and Italy despite facing many challenges.
Peppard tells of his first days in the unit fighting in Europe under accurate and very heavy bombardment by the German artillery. Despite their training, mortality rates were still high and Peppard lost many friends in the unit and this is why he decided to pen his memoir as a tribute to their sacrifice.
