Brought up in a Catholic home, he began writing gruesome short films at the age of eight. He has said that his love for this type of story was inspired by maternal stories of martyrs and saints, as well as a childhood enchantment.
During the early 1980s, del Toro founded
Necropia, a company where he continued to hone his special effects makeup skills as a makeup artist.
Working with Inarritu and Cuaron, they formed the
Three Amigos of Nuevo Cine Mexicano. The group found success on the global stage, creating popular Spanish-language works, such as Pan’s Labyrinth, which won several Academy Awards.
Del Toro’s best work is the 2017 release
The Shape of Water, which won Best Director and Picture at the Oscars. The work was a showcase of his lifelong love for monsters.
Guillermo del Toro published the work
The Strain in 2009.
It kicks off with the landing of an eerie plane in New York, in which all the passengers are dead. Called in to investigate is the CDC’s Dr. Eph Goodweather, who detects a dark, virulent strain in the bodies. Soon, a deadly form of vampirism is spreading across the city.
Dr. Eph collaborates with Setrakian, among several other allies, to attempt to halt the infection. As legend and science converge, humanity must contend with an enemy driven by a hunger for total control and bloodshed.
In 2010, Del Toro published the follow-up to
The Strain, titled
The Fall.
In this work, the vampire plague has taken over New York, with Dr. Eph Goodweather hoping to find the source of the virus leak, even as zombies roam the streets. Meanwhile, Setrakian, his partner, is hoping to locate the
Occido Lumen, a sort of incantation that could help banish the vampires.
Amid escalating dread, feral skirmishes, and betrayals, humans are on the edge of annihilation and subjugation. But they are not going to take it lying down.
In
The Shape of Water, Guillermo del Toro tells the story of a mute janitor named Elisa Esposito who finds himself in a dull job working at a secret lab.
One night, she finds a strange creature in the lab, brought in from the Amazon, that is part human, part fish, and both scary and beautiful. She communicates with it through sign language, and it is not long before they have developed a strong bond.
But as their fledgling love grows, Russian agents and Colonel Strickland threaten to destroy her lover for Cold War gains.
