Graham Masterton is my Stephen King. I love the adaptions of King’s novels. But the actual books don’t work for me. Granted, I’ve only read four, so maybe I read the four worst ones.
Either way, whenever people ask for horror recommendations, Masterton is at the top of my list. I first took note of him when I read ‘The Manitou.’ The synopsis alone was enough to send shivers down my spine. Can you imagine scheduling a procedure to remove a suspicious lump beneath your skin, only for that lump to move before the doctors can cut it?
‘The Manitou’ disturbed me in all the right ways. But then I discovered the Katie Maguire books and realized that I hadn’t even scratched the surface of Masterton’s disturbing imagination.
I am hardly squeamish. However, those books were almost too grotesque for me. I don’t know if other readers know of Masterton. I have never taken the time to research the author. Maybe he’s a bigger deal than I realize. If he isn’t, more people should read his work. Masterton is the true master of horror.
