Grace Blakeley is famous as a British journalist, political commentator, and economist known for her criticism of capitalism and essays promoting socialism. She is a panelist on
TalkTV, a staff writer for
Tribune, a contributor to
Novara Media, and a commentator on the
New Statesman focusing on economics.
Following her schooling, Grace Blakeley got a job with
KPMG, where she was a management consultant working in the
Healthcare Practice and
Public Sector divisions. She would then work at the Manchester-based
Institute for Public Policy think tank as a specialist in regional economic policy.
It was in 2019 that Grace joined the
New Statesman magazine where she contributed to podcasts and the website as she wrote a fortnightly column. Her writings in the magazine supported a
Green New Deal and
Lexit. In 2020, she moved to the
Tribune, the democratic socialist magazine where she worked as a staff writer.
While she calls herself a democratic socialist, she left the
Labour Party in 2023 due to disagreements with Keir Starmer over the reaction of the party to happenings in the
Israel-Hamas War.
As a Euroskeptic, she believes the
European Union is a neocolonial and neoliberal organization run for the benefit of corporate and financial elites.
In 2019, Grace Blakeley published her debut work
Stolen. In this work, she looks into the signs of a looming collapse years before the 2008 crisis. She looks into morbid symptoms such as cheap consumer goods, rising house prices, and booming banks which masked the fragility that had resulted from more than three decades of financial wizardry and rocketing debt.
Grace Blakeley published her second book,
Futures of Socialism, a year after her first. This is a collection of comment and analyses that reassess socialist strategies following the ravages of the coronavirus pandemic. It comes with debates on precarity and austerity, the legacy of Empire and anti-racism, prospects of a
Green New Deal, and the centrality of public ownership.
The Corona Crash is a work that Blakeley published in 2020. In this one, Grace theorizes on the many changes the coronavirus forced on the world. She asserts that the crisis is likely to result in a new era of monopoly capitalism as corporate organizations are gobbled up by the state while the tech giants experience unprecedented growth.
