Glyn Daniel
Glyn Daniel was born on April 23rd, 1914. Glyn passed away December 13th, 1986 at 72 years old. Glyn Daniel was born in Lampeter Velfrey, Pembrokeshire, Wales. Daniel attended.
Glyn Daniel was a Welsh archaeologist and scientist who taught about the European Neolithic period at Cambridge University. He played a significant role in popularizing archaeology and antiquity through both radio and television. In 1974, he was appointed Disney Professor of Archaeology, and he later took over the editorship of the academic journal
Antiquity. His main area of focus was the study of Neolithic chamber tombs, and he also edited numerous studies related to archaeological sites and cultures.
During World War II, Glyn used his expertise in interpreting archaeological sites while working for the Royal Air Force, specializing in air photography. He studied and analyzed photos from enemy territories, and his efforts earned him the rank of Wing Commander when he was sent to India to lead photographic interpretation in Delhi.
After the war, Glyn launched an archaeology program called
Buried Treasure on the BBC. He also hosted a popular game show,
Animal, Vegetable, Mineral? In 1955, he was named Television Personality of the Year.
Glyn authored two detective novels, the first being
The Cambridge Murders, written under the pseudonym Dilwyn Rees, though it was later republished under his own name in 1965. The story revolves around Fisher College, a fictional institution nestled between St John’s and Trinity Colleges at Cambridge, which remains unnoticed by most people.
The plot thickens when a college porter’s body is discovered, shot dead in the courtyard. Soon after, a notorious Dean goes missing, and his body is eventually found in the trunk of Cherrington’s nephew’s car. The inspector leading the investigation begins suspecting Cherrington, but it isn’t long before the focus shifts to Evan, who has been involved with the Dean’s wife.
Cherrington, unaware that he’s a suspect, sets out to solve the mystery, initially for academic reasons. Using his knowledge of history, he attempts to unravel the mysteries of the past to solve the present crime. However, his investigation makes him appear increasingly suspicious. Will Cherrington catch the real villain before the authorities decide to charge him? The novel is an entertaining mystery set in a time when there were no phones, security cameras, or credit card receipts.
Glyn Daniel also wrote
Welcome Death, in which Sir Richard Cherrington is invited by his aunt to investigate a poison-pen mystery in a village. Poison-pen letters were common during the war, and though the incidents had died down, they have started again.
Cherrington’s aunt doesn’t want him to reveal the identity of the poison-pen culprit—who is well-known in the village—but rather to stop the person before more harm is done. When Evan Morgan, a man who has hurt many women in the village, is found stabbed, few are surprised, and many hope the killer won’t be caught. However, both the police and Cherrington want justice to be served.
Cherrington hadn’t anticipated that his creativity as an amateur detective would be used to solve a real murder case.
Welcome Death is a solid mystery with an engaging setting and a well-crafted cast of characters.
Glyn Daniel has been included on the Japanese guide book
Honkaku Mystery Best 10 list once. In 2009,
The Cambridge Murders was listed at #6 that year.
