Giorgio de Santillana

Giorgio de Santillana was born on May 30th, 1902. Giorgio passed away June 8th, 1974 at 72 years old. Giorgio de Santillana was born in Rome, Italy. de Santillana attended the Universita di Roma alla Sapienza where he received a physics degree. He also studied at the Universita degli studi di Milano.

Giorgio de Santillana was an Italian-American philosopher and historian of science, especially of ancient science and of the Renaissance science of Galileo Galilei. He was a Professor of the History of Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

He graduated in 1925 from the Universita di Roma alla Sapienza with a physics degree. Then he spent 2 years studying philosophy in Paris, followed by 2 more years in physics at the Universita degli studi di Milano.

After his time in Milan, he got called back to Rome by Federigo Enriques to put a course together on the history of science. While in Rome he taught philosophy and history of science.

He started teaching at MIT in 1941, becoming an assistant professor the next year. From 1943 until 1945, he served in the US Army as a war correspondent, and in 1945, he became a naturalized US citizen. After the war ended, he went back to MIT and in 1948 was made associate professor. He became a full Professor of the History of Science in the School of Humanities in 1954. Giorgio received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1957.

The Crime of Galileo. In a gallery of what may be called the martyrs of thought, the mere image of Galileo recanting before the Italian Inquisition stirs the minds of educated modern men second just to the image of Socrates drinking the Hemlock.

The image of Galileo is out of focus, since it’s become distorted by 3 centuries of rationalist prejudice and clerical polemics. In order to refocus it more clearly, within the logic of its own time, Giorgio has written this book, a masterly intellectual whodunit that traces not just the life but the mental footsteps Galileo took on his road to personal tragedy.

Hamlet’s Mill: An Essay Investigating the Origins of Human Knowledge and Its Transmission Through Myth is a seminal work of philosophical and scientific exploration. Ever since the Greeks coined the language that we commonly use for scientific description, science and mythology have developed separately. However what if we were able to prove that all myths have a common origin in their celestial cosmology? What if the gods, what they did and the places that they live, are just ciphers for celestial activity, a language for the perpetuation of complex astronomical data?

Pulling upon scientific data, literary and historical sources, the writers argue that our myths are the remains of a preliterate astronomy, an exacting science whose accuracy and power were suppressed and then just forgotten by an emergent Greco-Roman world view.

This is a fascinating book that throws into doubt some assumptions of Western science about the unfolding development and the transmission of knowledge. It’s a truly original and seminal thesis, a book which should be read by anybody interested in myth, science, and the interactions between the two.
