Australian National University, where he taught until he retired in 2015.

In 2008, Geremie R. Barmé published the novel
The Forbidden City. It explores the city of Zijin Cheng at the heart of Beijing, which has been a heritage museum for socialist, republican, and monarchist citizens.
Over the years, it has been lambasted and celebrated as a symbol of all that is terrible and magnificent in China. The author dives deep into the veneer of passions, power, inscrutability, and secrecy of imperial China to offer an original history of the architecture, politics, and culture of the Forbidden City.
