Gay New York: Gender, Urban Culture, and the Making of the Gay Male World, 1890-1940 brilliantly shatters the myth that before the 1960s, gay life existed merely in the closet, where all the gay men were invisible, isolated, and ashamed. Based upon years of research in letters, police reports, diaries, and newspaper stories, George describes the speakeasies, saloons, and streets where queer men gathered; the intimate parties and immense drag balls where they celebrated; the highly visible residential enclaves that they built in Harlem, Times Square, and Greenwich Village; and the complex prewar sexual culture they inhabited, which didn’t divide men into homosexuals and heterosexuals.

It offers up some new points of view on the LGBT rights revolution of our time by showing the oppression the movement attacked during the 60s wasn’t unchanging, yet had only intensified by the 1930s as a direct response to the visibility of the prewar gay world.

This book won the Lambda Literary Award, the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, and the Organization of American Historians’ prize for the best first book in any field history upon its 1994 publication, this is still a revelatory account of a long-forgotten world and most widely taught book in all American LGBT history.
