Fred Astaire
Fred Astaire (Frederick Austerlitz) was born on May 10th, 1899. Fred passed away June 22nd, 1987 at 88 years old. Fred Astaire was born in Omaha, Nebraska, USA.
Fred Astaire was an American presenter, dancer, choreographer, actor, musician, and singer who had a career on TV, film, and stage that spanned nearly eight decades. Over his lengthy career, he was deemed one of the best pop music dancers of all time.
Over the years, Astaire developed a reputation for having effortless presentation, creativity, an uncanny sense of rhythm, and seemingly endless perfectionism. His perfectionism was often a burden on the people he worked with as many could not match his precision, elegance, originality, and grace.
Drawing from a range of sources from classical to tap dance and the style of Irene and Vernon Castle, he developed a trademark style that would be a big influence on the ballroom style in the United States. Fred Astaire used to follow an instinctive and unpredictable muse and hence called his unusual approach the
outlaw style.
In 1933, Astaire got a role in
Dancing Lady, the movie that opened the door for him in the acting world. In no time at all he had a contract with
RKO Radio Pictures where he started working with Ginger Rogers the Broadway talent. The two became one of the most beloved dancing duos in the United States.
Outside of his dancing, he was a committed family man and was married to Phyllis Baker Potter with whom he had two children. Phyllis also helped raise Astaire’s child from an earlier marriage. The two remained married until Phyllis died in 1954 after which Fred remarried.
In 1959, Fred Astaire published his first autobiography
Steps in Time at a time when he still had quite a chunk of his career and life ahead of him. As such, this book goes back to his time on the stages of New York doing vaudeville, the classic dancing years, and the time he spent as an actor.
It describes his relationship with Adele his sister and Phyllis his first wife before delving into his social life, his friendships, and his love for horse racing.
The Man, The Dancer: The Life of Fred is a work that follows Astaire’s beginnings when he used to dance with Adele, his sister. He tells of how he transitioned to Broadway before becoming an actor. It then proceeds to tell of his retirement, the death of Phyllis, his wife, and how he met Robyn, his second wife.
