Work! Consume! Die!, Frankie (stand up comedy’s favorite pessimist) offers up some laugh-out-loud, outrageous, cynical ranting on life as he knows it. He describes your reality as viewed through this bloodshot eye pressed against a shit-smeared telescope while being focused on hell.
Brace yourself for his novel, since he’s more outspoken and even more brilliantly inappropriate than ever before.
There are some fears that this year could very easily see the beginning of a double-dip recession, or even worse still a double-dip-with-misery-sprinkles and where’s my job sauce. Why not chuckle into the howling void while some taloned fingers reach up to consume you with this book.
It’s a no-holds-barred tour de force of comic writing. It is Frankie at his taboo-busting, brutal best. It’s nothing more or less than the clanging call to arms of this dying mechanical God.
Meantime is set in Glasgow in 2015. When Marina, the best friend of Felix McAveety (a Valium addict), is found murdered in a local park, he goes hunting for answers to some questions that he soon forgets. Felix gets help from a failing screenwriter; a brilliant yet mercurial GP; one bright young trade unionist; Jane Pickford (a semi-celebrity crime novelist); and Donnie (his crisis fueled downstairs neighbor).
Their investigation sends them on a bewildering expedition which takes in cults, Scottish radical politics, Artificial Intelligence, secret agents, smugglers, and vegan record shops.
This is a picaresque detective tale set against the backdrop of post-referendum Scotland. It’s a compelling debut of revenge and murder, and about political and personal loss.
The novel was nominated for Bloody Scotland’s Debut of the Year award for Crime Writing. He wrote the novel as he was in hotel rooms after his gigs, saying that he’d be unable to sleep from the adrenaline.
