Frances Lambert was a British knitter, embroiderer, and author who knew everything about knitting for her time. She was so good that was Queen Victoria’s needlewoman in ordinary and embroiderer general. Over her career, she published works in New York and London advising on knitting, embroidery, and crochet.
Lambert was born to a mother named Frances Lambert and Thomas Lambert a father that was an expert in lace. Her family was engaged in the manufacture of military trimmings and it was from her father and mother that she learned how to work with textiles. By 1820, she had set up her one shop in Coventry Street London selling trimmings.
In 1836, she got married to a gentleman named John Bell Sedgwick and it is believed that it was from the latter’s name that she took the initial S. in her name. Frances started working for Queen Adelaide and it was not long before she was working for Queen Victoria herself.
Frances Lambert would become one of the most influential women in knitting as she advised knitters on the critical aspect of how to get the right tension while knitting. She also advocated that every knitter needed to have their own knitting needle gauge.
In 1847, Frances sold her stocks and her business on 3 New Burlington Street since she intended to retire. She died in Marylebone in 1880.
