I like Kate. I am yet to read Body’s standalone novels, but the Kate books are good, and if I’m being honest, Kate is the primary attraction. These days, creating a compelling but strong female character is not easy.
Most authors make the heroine boastful and bullish, which doesn’t work for me because it makes the character unlikable. But Kate is nice. She struggles with daily life just like any other human being.
Her confident personality is just a façade hiding a sweet but uncertain investigator that doesn’t appreciate conflict. I suppose the heartaches of her past humanize her, but they don’t define her. Brody has created a surprisingly balanced protagonist.
