Eric Gorges
Eric Gorges was born in Detroit, Michigan, United States.
Eric Gorges, an author and the host of the Public TV
A Craftsman’s Legacy. He was in the corporate world until health problems made him reconsider his life goals. As a result, Gorges pursued one of the most prominent and in-demand metal shapers in the country and signed on as his apprentice. Gorges set out on his own in 1999, starting with a custom motorcycle shop in Detroit, Michigan, where he still resides today.
In 2019, Gorges published
A Craftsman’s Legacy, a book designed for makers and seekers of all kinds, which gives a glimpse into the heart and soul of artisans. Readers accompany Gorges as he meets with 25 artisans and tries his hand at their ingenuity, and learn more about artisanship and, most importantly, more about crafting a meaningful life.
In the modern industrialized world, we are conditioned to identical machine-made products, and the idea of buying handcrafted products seems a bit outdated. It’s through the interviews that Gorges has woven this collection of stories from his conversations with those special iconoclasts who perfect their craft with their hands, mental skills, and nature's natural resources.
The author also related how his passion for metal shaping and his hobby of working on motorcycles helped him quit his well-paying white-collar job and get his hands dirty, leading him to his current calling as a machinist.+9
Throughout these short stories, readers meet glassblowers, potters, engravers, sword-makers, furniture-makers, weavers, chocolate producers, and many others. Each individual explains the circumstances that led them to their chosen direction and how they constantly strive to achieve perfection in their respective art, but realize that their urge to attain perfection will always be an upward climb. Nevertheless, it's intriguing to share in the stories of these reborn crafters, fully immersed in work with their hands, heads, and hearts.
Besides the interviews and the short story collection, Gorges’ book remains the most inspiring. Very few people would be willing to quit their corporate job to work as an assistant craftsman, even when they’re not struggling with mental health problems like Gorges did.
Gorges passion for the subject matter is evident throughout each page, and if you’re familiar with
Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, then this Eric Gorges book is a highly recommended read.
