Eric Fair
Eric Fair is best known as a veteran with the Army who worked as a contract interrogator in Iraq in 2004. He had been hired by a private company that needed him to help with the questioning of prisoners in places such as Falluja and Abu Ghraib prison.
During his time in Iraq, Eric Fair used horrific methods in investigations of prisoners, such as isolating them, depriving them of sleep, and keeping them in stress positions. While the government at the time deemed such methods legal, Fair now has a lot of regret using them.
Following that stint, he returned to Iraq and worked with the NSA as an intelligence analyst. He would then come to call what he did in Iraq in earlier years torture, as he came to believe that there is no middle ground between torture and interrogation.
After many years in Iraq, he moved back to the United States, but his experiences stayed with him for years afterward.
In 2016, Eric Fair published his debut work,
Consequence, in which he tells of his life as a contract interrogator in Iraq. He saw and took part in harsh interrogations that included isolation, sleep deprivation, exposure, diet manipulation, and stress positions. When he moved back home, his marriage and health suffered, and he started drinking and having nightmares from his guilt. He ultimately needed to get a transplant for his failing heart. He took advantage of his desire to talk about the evils he had done, and this would become the key to his healing.
Outside of his memoir, he continues to speak about his mistakes with candor. He speaks honestly about the consequences of his work as an interrogator and takes responsibility for them.
