I was late to Elizabeth Moon’s Paksenarrion party. But it isn’t my fault. I don’t read books like this. Like most modern readers, I prefer a brisk pace. I am also drawn to novels that provide a deeper exploration of the science fiction concepts. I want to stand with the characters, to see what they see.

The Paksennarrion books come from a different era. They are slower, and you get a lot of leisurely narration. If this were a modern novel, I honestly wouldn’t have bothered.

I expect a good book to impress me within the first few pages. But I gave Elizabeth’s books a lot of leeway because I knew they were published in the 1980s. Fortunately, Elizabeth rewarded my patience with a captivating story.
