Elizabeth Forsythe Hailey

Elizabeth Forsythe Hailey was born on August 31st, 1938 and is currently 87 years old. Elizabeth Forsythe Hailey was born in Dallas, Texas, United States.

Elizabeth Forstythe Hailey is a playwright and journalist from the United States, best known for her debut novel, A Woman of Independent Means.

Her very first job was as a journalist, before she moved into media and publishing, and then into writing for theatre and television. Very early on, she teamed up with her husband and consulted on TV, lending her narrative expertise to the medium.

In 1978, she published A Woman of Independent Means, which became a bestseller, struck a chord with readers, and was adapted into many formats. Following the success of her debut, she continued to explore societal and domestic themes in subsequent works.

Elizabeth Hailey's fiction often combines a gently subversive view of the external opportunities and inner lives of women with a respect for traditional conventions.

Elizabeth Forsythe Hailey has gone on a journey that has taken her from being a journalist to becoming a leading voice telling the stories of women's lives, as she imagines complex emotional landscapes and reports on facts.

She also works in her community, asking questions as she has become an active participant in shaping cultural dialogue.

In her debut work, A Woman of Independent Means, Elizabeth introduces Bess Steed, a woman who lives at a time when women have very few choices.

It is at this time that Bess inherits a legacy of desire, determination, and wealth, which makes her one of the most independent women. From the 1900s to the 1960s, Bess endures life's trials and enjoys its triumphs with an indomitable spirit and unfailing courage.

She tells of the sacrifices required, the rewards and flaws of marriage, the often-tested bond between a child and its mother, and the will to go against a society that often asks for conformity.

Four years later, in 1982, Elizabeth published Life Sentences, which tells the story of Cissie, Meg, and Lindsay, former college mates who reunite two decades after college.

As the women reconnect, they explore their marriages, their parents, and their children, and gain clarity about independence, duty, and love. Their renewed relationship allows them to accept the emotional commitments with greater confidence.

It is a work that reflects on the courage to love and interdependence in an age of liberation.

In her 1991 work Home Free, Elizabeth tells the story of a traditional middle-class housewife, Kate, who unexpectedly faces two life-changing events.

Her husband, Cliff, to whom she had been married for two dozen years, abandoned her and went to live with his former girlfriend. Then Ford, an Iowa farmer, dispossessed of everything, begs her to let him and his family live with her for a few days while he finds a way forward.

Championing the plight of people experiencing homelessness, her life takes on new meaning.
