E. L. James is my guilty pleasure. You won’t catch me reading her books out in the open, where people can see me. But at the same time, she keeps me thoroughly entertained. People try to defend the author. They argue that she is only demonized because most readers do not appreciate her style or the depth of her characters.
But I couldn’t disagree more. E. L. James is not an author. She is not a professional writer, and for once, that is a good thing because her style is so straightforward that it keeps non-readers engaged. I know people who cannot read a 300-page romance novel without falling asleep. And yet, they read the entire Fifty Shades series, which speaks to James’ talent.
I read the trilogy, was not impressed, but wanted to see what all the hype was about. It struck me as fantasy.
No thank you. Not my cup of tea. Maybe for some, but not for me.
