Diane Carlson Evans
Diane Carlson Evans was born in 1946 and is currently 79 years old.
Diane Carlson Evans is a former U.S. Army Nurse and veteran of the Vietnam War who would make a name for herself as a powerful voice for honoring the military contributions of women.
Evans was brought up in rural Minnesota, where her family lived on a dairy farm. From 1968 to 1969, she served in Vietnam as part of the
Army Nurse Corps, where she treated severely wounded soldiers.
During her time in Vietnam, she was in the Vung Tau-based
36th Evacuation Hospital’s burn unit before she transferred to the 71st based in Pleiku. All in, she did half a dozen years of service in the Army.
Outside the army, Diane Carlson Evans made her name as the founder of the nonprofit
Vietnam Women’s Memorial Foundation. She founded the organization because she noticed that there was a severe lack of recognition of women at the
Veterans Memorial for the Vietnam War.
She made it her mission to ensure that more than 200,000 women who served in the
Vietnam War got the recognition they deserved. In this quest, she was at the forefront of a 10-year campaign which ended in 1993 when the
Vietnam Women’s Memorial was commissioned in Washington, D.C.
During the process, she testified before Federal Agencies and Congress and even led the design competition and organized the
Patriotism and Courage three-day event for the dedication of the memorial.
Today, Carlson Evans chairs the
Vietnam Women’s Memorial. She is active in veteran education and outreach, speaking across the US to raise awareness about the need for readjustment services for veterans and the role of women in the Vietnam War.
In 2020, Diane Carlson Evans published her memoir
Healing Wounds in which she chronicles her journey to becoming an Army nurse and ultimately an advocate for veteran rights and women's recognition.
Evans tells of the many experiences she had taking care of wounded soldiers in Vietnam and how much of a toll it took on her psyche. Haunted by the lack of recognition and trauma, she embarked on a ten-year quest to establish a memorial for women who had served in the Vietnam War. She tells of the cultural indifference and bureaucratic resistance, and how she persevered until the memorial was dedicated in 1993.
