In 2020, Derek Gow published his debut work, Bringing Back the Beaver, in which he chronicles his efforts to bring back beavers to the UK.

Combining real struggles with humor, he shows the strong opposition he had to deal with from landowners, the government, and a select number of experts. Nonetheless, he worked hard to bring back beavers to the rivers of Scotland and England.

He explains the importance of beavers in the ecosystem as they store water, help control flooding, and make habitats that can be used by other animals.

In his second work, Birds, Beasts and Bedlam, Derek Gow shares brave and lively stories from his life.

During his childhood, he loved animals, and this would only grow as he grew older. Later, he realized that many species of animals were no longer roaming the fields and decided to change his farm into a rewilding space.

He got rid of fences and brought back animals such as wildcats, beavers, and put them into a place he let nature reclaim.

Derek tells of how he got bitten by a wildcat, moved a dangerous bison, and raised a wild boar. These are moments that are sometimes risky, wild, but also funny.

In 2024, Derek Gow published Hunt for the Shadow Wolf, which follows him on his quest to bring back wolves to the British Isles.

While working on other animals, he got interested in wolves and their history in Britain. He studied old myths, records, and stories to get a better understanding of wolves.

During his study, he realized that the fear of wolves was often connected to danger, but also money and power. He also realized that through myths, wolves had been turned into monsters and then wiped out.
