Some of the hate Deanna Raybourn gets is uncalled for. Okay, it isn’t really hate. But people have criticized the feminist components in the Veronica Speedwell books, specifically the fact that Veronica is an independent, strong-willed woman living in a time period that oppressed women.
I understand where some of those complaints are coming from. When an author adds a social message to their book, you want that message to fit seamlessly into the story.
But I would argue that Veronica’s progressive attitudes are a sensible addition because they allow modern readers that normally avoid historical fiction to connect with a character living in an era they don’t understand.
