Dawn Web is a queer and neurodivergent artist from a small town in Ottawa, Ontario. They grew up in a conservative, mixed-race family of six. Dawn began using art at a young age as a way to manage stress and process their experiences. Over time, this creative outlet developed into a professional path across multiple fields.
Dawn is a multidisciplinary artist with experience in dance, music, writing, and visual media. They are a first-place award-winning dancer and their work has been featured in Fathom Creative Writing Journal, Dalhousie Gazette, and Ride the Wave.
Additionally, Dawn performs as a multi-instrumentalist and backup vocalist in the band Wool Sweater and works as the Creative Director for Vivid Illusion Creative Studios Inc., where they lead a variety of creative projects.
After moving to Halifax, Nova Scotia, Dawn earned their Bachelor of Science with a specialization in Neuroscience and Psychology from Dalhousie University. While there, they took a creative writing class that helped shape their interest in storytelling and expanded their professional focus.
Web's work history includes roles working as a Research Assistant, First Responder, Child and Youth Counsellor, and Personal Support Caretaker. These positions allowed Dawn to support others while continuing to develop their creative work. They later shifted their focus entirely to writing and the arts.
Dawn’s background and experiences influence the themes they explore in their work. Dawn has said that they approach each project with clarity and a strong sense of purpose, and they utilize real-world experiences to inform their work. Their work reflects a commitment to personal expression and community engagement through honest, direct storytelling.
Red Corner is their first poetry collection, but it is more than just a poetry book. The book features writing and illustrations from Web and photographs by Angelina Wrona.
Red Corner explores themes of identity, queer and political struggles, love, personal growth, perseverance, and the impact of intergenerational trauma. It focuses on breaking harmful cycles and moving toward healing.
