David Dayen

David Dayen was born on February 12th, 1973 and is currently 53 years old. David Dayen was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. Dayen attended the University of Michigan where he received an English degree.

David Dayen is an American author, journalist, and editor of the public policy and progressive political magazine The American Prospect. The Philadelphia native became interested in comedy and storytelling when he was still very little.

During his early adulthood years, he used to write for a humor magazine. After he was done with school, he found a job with NFL Films where he was employed as a video editor, even as he got into stand-up comedy in his thirties.

During the early 2000s, he got into journalism and blogged mostly about politics. He was one of the leading figures of the Netroots progressive movement and worked for FireDogLake, the blog as a news director. In addition, his work has been featured in The Los Angeles Times, The Intercept, and The Washington Post, among others.

Since 2019, David Dayen has worked for The American Prospect as an executive editor. For the most part, he works on in-depth reporting on political and economic power structures.

At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, he was the author of Unsanitized, a daily newsletter in which he analyzed the impact on the economy and public health.

In 2024, he launched Organized Money, a podcast where he discusses corporate power and financial systems alongside Matt Stoller, the antitrust researcher.

Alongside Mary Jack, his wife, he makes his home in Venice, California.

In 2016, David Dayen published his work Chain of Title, in which he looks into how three Florida residents who were facing foreclosure unearthed unprecedented mortgage fraud.

Lisa Epstein, Lynn Szymoniak, and Michael Redman identify fraudulent practices such as forged documents and robo signing that unscrupulous banks used to illegally repossess homes even though they do not have formal legal training.

They find systemic failures in the mortgage industry and a lack of accountability among government agencies and financial institutions.
David Dayen published Monopolized in 2020.

Through real-life case studies and detailed reporting, he shows how major industries have amassed a lot of power, thus reducing consumer choice and competition. He showcases the negative impact of monopolies, such as how they resulted in renters getting exploited and farmers being driven out of their farms by massive conglomerates.

According to the author, monopolistic practices have festered and thrived due to the decline of antitrust enforcement, which he believes has to be revived to protect democracy and restore economic balance.
