The 1968 movie
Planet of the Apes is one of those movies that you know so much about even when you haven’t watched it. Most people know that the movie adaptation diverges a lot from the French source book, and so is the comic adaptation by Dana Gould.
Much like the movie version, Dana’s
Planet of the Apes: Visionaries book begins on a spaceship, and we meet the astronauts as they’re going into suspended animation. When they land, they discover that one of their members has died on the journey, which makes them question exactly how long they’ve been asleep.
The other three astronauts head out and discover primitive people before the apes come and round them up. One is killed while the other two are injured and taken prisoner. So far, the movie and comic versions are the same, but things change when they’re taken to captivity. The main character, Thomas, discovers an advanced ape civilization.
He regains consciousness as they are about to perform brain surgery on him, becomes a public sensation, and is subsequently introduced to the ape society by Dr. Zira.
What makes
Planet of the Apes: Visionaries different from the movie version is that the book is more philosophical. The apes are more civilized, so they parallel humans in the 1960s more closely, which works better as an allegory than the film does. And while this does not change the flow of the story in any major way, there is something more surprising about having this world of apes, which is so similar to the world we are living in.’
If you have watched the movie, you will easily understand the broad bits of Gould’s comic book, but that shouldn’t discourage you from picking it up. The book is less of an action movie and more of a reflection on what makes humans civilized. Even if you’re not a fan of the movie, this is an interesting read.
