Christy Brown
Christy Brown was born on June 5th, 1932 and is currently 92 years old. Christy Brown was born in Dublin, Ireland.
Christy Brown was a celebrated Irish painter and writer who overcame cerebral palsy and made a name for himself in the creative world.
While he is mostly known for the movie
My Left Foot, his creativity extends beyond that as he has written a memoir, four poetry collections, and four novels, in addition to hundreds of paintings.
In his early childhood, Christy Brown was misdiagnosed with an intellectual disability. However, his mother thought she saw in him determination and intellect and refused to send him to an institution. By the time he was five, he was grabbing chalk with his toes.
Upon turning eighteen, he started penning his autobiography, which he completed by the time he was 22, under the tutelage and encouragement of the writer Dr. Bob Collis. The work that was released in 1954 is what would be his breakthrough work as it brought him into the international spotlight.
Aside from his writing, Brown produced expressive paintings as a member of the
Disabled Artists Association. His works often reflected his insights and struggles. But despite his many accomplishments, Christy was an alcoholic, as he used strong drink to deal with societal challenges and spark his creativity.
In his first work,
My Left Foot, Christy Brown chronicled his life as a child living with cerebral palsy. Unable to communicate or move, he was lucky that his mother believed in him, and with her encouragement, he made an attempt at communicating with his left foot. Over time, he would become an expert writer and artist who used his creativity to express his emotions.
In 1970, Christy published
Down All the Days, a critically acclaimed semi-autobiographical work about a young man confined to a boxcar due to his cerebral palsy. From his box, he provides insights into life in the slums of Dublin, his boisterous and large family, and the resilience of working class citizens of Dublin.
In Christy Brown’s
A Shadow on Summer, we follow a disabled Irish author who is in the US to celebrate the publishing of his debut novel across the pond and complete the writing of his second. However, things turn complicated when he meets Abbie Lang, who develops feelings for him. It gets even more interesting when his host’s wife also falls for him. But his focus on his craft means he cannot return their affections.
