Christian Bök is a poet best known for his experimental works. His book
Eunoia won the Canadian Griffin Poetry Prize.
It was during his early 20s that he began writing seriously while he was obtaining his MA and BA degrees at Carleton University in Ottawa. During the early 90s he returned to Toronto in order to study for a PhD in English literature at York University, and it was here that he found this burgeoning literary community which included Darren Wershler, Steve McCaffery.
Beginning in 2004, he taught at the University of Calgary, however he began working as an artist in Melbourne, Australia, and serves as a Professor (Honorary Appointee) at Charles Darwin University in Darwin, Australia.
Christian has created conceptual art, making artist’s books out of Lego bricks and Rubik’s cubes. He once performed an extremely condensed version of Kurt Schwitters’
Ursonate.
Christian has worked in science fiction TV shows by constructing artificial languages for Peter Benchley’s
Amazon and Gene Rodenberry’s
Earth: Final Conflict.
Crystallography is a real gem of a book, an instant hit that wound up receiving a Gerald Lampert Award.
Crystallography is the study of crystal, however taken more literally is ‘lucid writing’. The book exists in this intersection of science and poetry, exploring the relationship between crystals and language, examining language as a crystal, this space where the chaos of individual parts align to expose a perfect formation of structure.
Like Bok himself says ‘a word is sort of like a crystal in formation’, which suggests that there is this space where words, like crystals, are able to resonate pure form.
The book was out of print for a number of years until 2003 when it was reissued.
Eunoia is a word that means “beautiful thinking” is the shortest English word that contains all 5 vowels. The book contains them all as well, it’s just that each one will appear by itself in its own chapter.
There is a unique personality for each vowel that quickly emerges: the courtly A, the elegiac E, lyrical I, the jocular O, and obscene U. It’s a triumphant feat, 7 years in the making, this uncanny work of avant-garde literature which promises to be one of the most important books of the entire decade.
The book sold 20,000 copies. When it was published in Britain in 2008, it hit #8 on the Top 10 bestselling charts for the entire year.
