Charles Oakley is a former professional basketball player in the NBA. He played 10 of his 19 seasons with the Knicks. As a power forward, he consistently ranked as being one of the best rebounders and defensive players in the league. Other teams he played for include the Washington Wizards, Houston Rockets, Toronto Raptors, and Chicago Bulls.
He went to John Hay High School, where he excelled at basketball.
Then he went to Virginia Union University, a Division II historically black university in Richmond. During his senior year he led Virginia Union to the 1985 NCAA championship. They had a 31-1 record that year, with Charles averaging 17.3 rebounds and 24 points a game. He was named NCAA Division II Player of the Year. He grabbed 1,642 rebounds and scored 2,379 points during his college career.
He was drafted by the Cavaliers with the 9th overall pick in the 1985 draft, which they traded to the Bulls, along with Calvin Duncan, for Keith Lee and Ennis Whatley. He wound up being part of the NBA All-Rookie First Team in 1986.
During the 1994 Knicks season, which included a record 25 playoff games, Charles started every regular season and playoff game for a total and record of 107 games in a single season.
