The Biblical World of Gender: The Daily Lives of Ancient Women and Men is an anthology edited by Durgin and Dru Johnson. The book asks two key questions:
- What were the lives of women and men like in ancient Israel?
- How does it affect their thinking about gender?
The Biblical World of Gender focuses on how recent discussions of “biblical womanhood and manhood” often reflect modern ideas about masculinity and femininity rather than the historical context of the biblical authors. In the biblical texts, gender is not usually a primary focus except in practical matters of daily life. However, the Book of Genesis 1 presents humanity as created “male and female,” indicating that biological sex is part of human identity. Instead of interpreting gender mainly through creation accounts or later teachings such as those attributed to Paul the Apostle, this approach examines everyday life in ancient settings.
The Biblical World of Gender considers households in ancient Israel, religious gatherings during the Second Temple period, and domestic structures in Roman cities such as Ephesus. These contexts help identify who managed households, villages, and urban environments, and who held authority or influence. The analysis also examines how social power was distributed and used within these communities.
Writers in the anthology use evidence from anthropology and archaeology. Their perspective reconstructs social patterns and roles related to gender. These findings are then compared with biblical writings to better understand how gender functioned in both daily life and the texts themselves. Their method aims to provide a historically grounded view of gender in the biblical world.
