I discovered Catherine Cookson in an article in The Guardian that spoke about how she had fallen out of the library charts. Apparently, she had been one of the most borrowed authors among the libraries in the UK, but she had fallen from her prominent position.

To be honest, I was more interested in the notion of a library chart than I was in Cookson. Though, the fact that she was still the 10th most borrowed author of the decade in 2010 compelled me to check her out.

It only took the first page of ‘The Silent Lady’ to win me over. She brings her characters to life in ways I’ve never seen before.
