Carmelo Anthony is a former basketball player who made his name as one of the most productive scorers in the history of the
National Basketball Association (NBA). He is also one of the most decorated basketball players in the history of basketball in the United States.
Earlier on, he made his name at Syracuse University where he won the National Collegiate Athletic Association championship. He also made history by winning three Olympic medals between 2008 and 2016.
After his exploits in college, Carmelo joined the Denver Nuggets as 2003’s third overall pick in the
NBA Draft. He became a regular in his first year with the Nuggets and played in all the games for that season. He averaged 1.2 steals, 21 points, 2.8 assists, and 6.1 rebounds during the season.
Doubling the win record for the Denver Nuggets, his rookie season was so good that only Lebron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers had a better first season that year. Over the years, he played for the New York Knicks, and Oklahoma City Thunder before ultimately bowing out playing for the Los Angeles Lakers.
In 2021, Carmelo Anthony published his memoir
Where Tomorrows Aren’t Promised. In this memoir, the author dives into the challenges of his upbringing, as he went against all odds to succeed in his life.
The memoir is all about Anthony’s life growing up in the housing projects in Brooklyn, Red Hook, and in particular the
Murphy Homes in Baltimore. The latter is the location of the
Murder Homes made popular by the popular series
The Wire on HBO.
Carmelo describes how dangerous the streets of his neighborhood were and asserts that gunshots were an everyday, normal sound. Death and murder were so common and Anthony even lost some of his loved ones to the violence. He goes into detail about his mental struggles living in that environment which would ultimately mold him into the man that he is today.
While it is a memoir of his early life up to when he signed for the NBA in the 2003 Draft, the main hero of the story is not Carmelo but rather Michelle his mother. The latter did all she could to ensure Carmelo had everything he needed to get ahead and achieve his dreams of becoming a basketball player.
