Carlos Santana
Carlos Santana (Carlos Humberto Santana Barragán) was born on July 20th, 1947 and is currently 77 years old. Carlos Santana was born in Autlán de Navarro, Jalisco, Mexico.
Carlos Santana is best known as a Mexican American musical artist who gained much fame and popularity for his work which usually infused blues, jazz, rock, and Afro-Cuban rhythms into a Latin sound.
He was just eight when he started showing his creative side by playing the violin. By the time he was in his teenage years, he was playing guitar in bands in Tijuana, where he was exposed to the work of some of the best guitarists alive then such as BB King and T-Bone Walker.
By the mid-1960s, he was living in San Francisco and was influenced by the fledgling rock scene and this resulted in the founding of the
Santana Blues Band. The band was largely successful and even performed at the 1969
Woodstock Festival and at
Fillmore West, the legendary club.
Carlos and his band produced several albums anchored on the extraordinary skills of Santana as their work infused Latin feel music with Afro-Cuban and rock genres. By 1969, the band had a number-one charting song titled
Evil Ways.
For about 20 years, the band achieved moderate success as its output turned more uneven. Part of this was that Santana became more influenced by John Coltrane and Miles Davis which resulted in music that was more of a fusion of Jazz and rock. During this time he also collaborated with jazz artists such as John McLaughlin and Buddy Miles.
In the early 1990s, mysticism and meditation became central to Carlos Santana’s life and he started producing music to offer healing and hope. This phase of his life resulted in the production of the album
Supernatural, which included collaborations with the likes of Clive Davis, Eric Clapton, and Lauryn Hill.
Santana is the winner of eight Grammy awards including three Latin Grammys. His band was inducted into the
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998 and he was named a
Kennedy Center honoree.
