Camonghne Felix

Camonghne Felix was born in 1992 and is currently 34 years old. Camonghne Felix was born in The Bronx, NY, USA. Felix attended New York University where she received a Master of Arts degree in Arts and Politics and Bard College where she received a Master of Fine Arts degree in Writing.

Camonghne Felix, who also writes under the pseudonym Ka’Mone, is a young poet who rose quickly in the world of spoken word.

At just 18, Felix became renowned in slam poetry, a performance art that combines competition, rhythm, and writing.

She began writing in 2009, and a year later was selected from thousands of teens to join the Urban Word NYC National Slam Team. As team leader, she helped them secure first place at the national competition, Brave New Voices.

Felix has established herself as both a distinctive individual poet and a collaborative team player. In 2010, she won the Nuyorican Neophyte Youth Slam and was named New York City Youth Poet of the Year. She also took second place in the Youth Poet Laureate Competition.

Beyond competitions, she has been featured in numerous publications, documentaries, and commercials. During Black History Month, she appeared on Nickelodeon, contributed to the Canadian anthology Five, and was highlighted in several Knicks Poetry Slam documentaries.

Her artistry has been showcased in many cultural spaces, including the New Young Roots series at the Hostos Center for Arts and Culture. She also worked at Island Def Jam Music Group as an Assistant A&R Representative, gaining valuable experience in music business and artist development.

In 2019, Felix published Build Yourself a Boat, a poetry collection exploring themes of healing, survival, and pain. Through sharp imagery, lyrical style, and memory, she examines both personal and collective trauma - reflecting on poverty, grief, politics, abuse, illness, and the lingering weight of the past. Yet, alongside the pain, her poems hold space for release, truth, and hope.

Felix’s work often shifts between intensity and quiet, tenderness and violence, as she reclaims identity, voice, and body while rejecting shame. Build Yourself a Boat demonstrates how something whole can emerge from what once seemed irreparably broken.

In her later collection, Dyscalculia, Felix offers a raw exploration of healing, trauma, and heartbreak. Written in the aftermath of a breakup so devastating it led to hospitalization, the book reflects on her lifelong relationship with pain, mental health, and the struggles of childhood.

Using the learning disorder dyscalculia as a metaphor, she links intimacy and love to miscalculation. The collection blends personal history with questions about the right to express and claim pain, while probing the tension between reality, love, perception, and harm. Ultimately, it shows how heartbreak can be both political and deeply personal.
