Every reader has a moment when they come across a fictional character that is so engaging and inspirational that they cannot help but treat them like a real person.

If you read Bryce Courtenay’s ‘The Power of One,’ Peekay is probably one of the best characters you have ever encountered in all of fiction. An uncle gave the book to me during my teenage years, and it consumed my Christmas holiday.

It was a little over 500 pages long, yet it felt like a 2000-page tome because so much happened. A few weeks ago, I found a copy of ‘The Power of One’ in my local library, and it moved me the same way it did when I was a teen. I’m yet to encounter a character as pure as Peekay.
