Bruce Schneier
Bruce Schneier was born on January 15th, 1963 and is currently 62 years old. Bruce Schneier was born in New York, New York, USA. Schneier attended the University of Rochester where he received a bachelor's degree in physics and American University where he received a master's degree in computer science.
Bruce Schneier is a well-known expert in security technology. He has written over a dozen books, including his latest one,
A Hacker's Mind, and has published many articles and papers. His popular newsletter
Crypto-Gram and blog
Schneier on Security have over 250,000 readers. Schneier has delivered speeches before Congress, featured on TV, and served on government committees. He is a fellow at Harvard's Berkman Klein Center and teaches at the Harvard Kennedy School. He also serves on the boards of organizations like the Electronic Frontier Foundation and AccessNow. Currently, he works as the Chief of Security Architecture at Inrupt, Inc.
Bruce Schneier lost his job in 1991 and began writing for computer magazines. He then decided to write a book about applied cryptography because there wasn’t one available at the time. He used his articles to create a proposal and sent it to the publisher John Wiley, and they accepted it. In 1994, he published
Applied Cryptography, a book that explains how cryptographic algorithms are designed, used, and implemented. The book is written, making it easy to understand, even with little math knowledge.
Although some sections involve more math, the book is mostly consistent in how much the reader needs to know. Schneier also touches on political and legal issues related to cryptography, making these discussions interesting without taking over the book. However, because cryptography evolves quickly, some of these references are becoming outdated.
However,
Applied Cryptography is not a book where one will find details of the most recent algorithms or computing power; rather, it demonstrates the eternal aspect of cryptography. Any person who wants to learn cryptography should find this very useful. Another Schneier book that was published in 2010 was
Cryptography Engineering, which was a book that would pave the way for how one could design cryptographic systems from scratch. The topics are all related to real-life engineering and security rather than theory and math. They contain some parts that only seem technical, but the language used by the author is easily understandable.
The first half of the book describes such concepts as block ciphers, hashing, and authentication, and potential types of attacks. It does a great job showing how to build secure systems and how attackers might try to break in. Common examples, like using Alice, Bob, and Eve in diagrams, make understanding the concepts easier.
The book also examines the existing cryptographic protocols and how they’re designed. While there is some math, the more complex parts are left as references, making it easier to read. There’s also a detailed section on Public Key Infrastructure and managing secret keys, with a strong focus on security risks in this area.
The book does a great job explaining cryptography and security. The three authors are experts and share their knowledge in a clear, unified way. If you want to build a system using cryptography, this book is highly recommended.
