The film starred Andrew McCarthy, Jami Gertz, James Spader, and Robert Downey Jr. Many changes were made to the story and Ellis has said that the film bears no resemblance to his novel. He did feel that the movie captured youth culture during the 80s in a way that other movies were unable to. American Psycho was a 2000 film by Mary Harron. The movie stars Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman and has since developed a large cult following. Ellis didn't think that the novel was filmable and it went through many writers before making its way to Harron. The movie doubles as a horror film and black comedy. There was a direct-to-video sequel released in 2002, but it is not based on any writings of Ellis. The Rules of Attracton was the third book by Bret Easton Ellis adapted into film. The film stars James Van Der Beek, Shannyn Sossamon, Ian Somerhalder, Jessica Biel, and Kate Bosworth as college students at Camden College. Van Der Beek plays Sean Bateman, the brother of American Psycho's Patrick Bateman. A scene was filmed with the two meeting, but it did not appear in the movie. The 2002 film was written and directed by Roger Avary. The Informers was a collection of short stories by Ellis that was turned into a film in 2009. The movie was directed by Gregor Jordan.
