The film starred Andrew McCarthy, Jami Gertz, James Spader, and Robert Downey Jr. Many changes were made to the story and Ellis has said that the film bears no resemblance to his novel. The film stars James Van Der Beek, Shannyn Sossamon, Ian Somerhalder, Jessica Biel, and Kate Bosworth as college students at Camden College. Van Der Beek plays Sean Bateman, the brother of American Psycho's Patrick Bateman. A scene was filmed with the two meeting, but it did not appear in the movie. The 2002 film was written and directed by Roger Avary. The Informers was a collection of short stories by Ellis that was turned into a film in 2009. The movie was directed by Gregor Jordan.
