Bram Stoker: TV/Movies Based on Books
Dracula is one of the most adapted books of all-time. The first adaptation of the book for film was filled with drama. Nosferatu, a 1922 silent film, was based on Dracula, but without any permission from Stoker's widow or royalties paid to her. She sued and demanded for the destruction of the tapes. The case went on for years and she eventually won. However, one print of the film survived and it has since become a well known work.
In 1931, the book was adapted with permission and starred Bela Lugosi in the title role.
In 1958, another version of Dracula was released with Christopher Lee in title role. It was released as Horror of Dracula in the United States in order to avoid confusion with the earlier film. The film spawned eight sequels, six of which starred Christopher Lee as Dracula.
In 1992, a movie titled Bram Stoker's Dracula was released starring Gary Oldman in the title role. The film was directed by Francis Ford Coppola.
