Bobby Richardson
Bobby Richardson (Robert Clinton Richardson, Jr.) was born on August 19th, 1935 and is currently 90 years old. Bobby Richardson was born in Sumter, South Carolina, USA.
Bobby Richardson is a former professional baseball player that played for the New York Yankees from 1955 until 1966.
Growing up, he had a strong desire to play for the Yankees after he saw the movie
The Pride of the Yankees.
Growing up, Bobby practiced his skills with Harry Stokes, this neighborhood boy 7 years older than him that would play catch with him. Bobby played on a local YMCA/Salvation Army team when he was 10. later on, he played with ballclubs that were sponsored by the local American Legion and Kiwanis Club. While on the American Legion team, his coach was Fred Hutchinson, who would later manage the Cincinnati Reds when Bobby faced them in the ‘61 World Series.
Having drawn interest from 11 out of 16 MLB teams, he signed a deal with the Yankees and made his debut for the team 2 years later. This decision included Bobby foregoing a college education and signing right out of high school, although he’d later get a degree in accounting.
He earned a regular roster spot in 1957, and made the All-Star Game for the first time that year.
Bobby got his first hit in the majors against Hall of Fame Jim Bunning in a 3-0 victory against the Detroit Tigers. He was a nervous wreck while playing the field, however no balls ended up being hit to him. He started 4 games at second in 3 days.
The catch he made to end the 1962 World Series was voted by
The Sporting News to be baseball’s 13th most memorable play in 1999.
Impact Player: Leaving a Lasting Legacy On and Off the Field is Bobby sharing his life story, including never-before-told stories from the Yankee clubhouse during the historic ‘55-’66 pennant runs and World Series appearances. It also features the unlikely friendship that Bobby (an outspoken and devout Christian) shared with Mickey Mantle (a womanizer and renowned drinker).
Bobby played along with Roger Maris, Mickey, Whitey Ford, Yogi Berra, and Joe Pepitone during one of the most prolific dynasties in all of baseball history, and he is still the only player from the losing team to be named World Series MVP.
The perfect combination of baseball and faith, this offers up a rare glimpse into one of the most celebrated dynasties in the history of the game, and paints this fascinating portrait of a life well-lived and the lasting rewards which come from loving and knowing God.
