Black Elk

Black Elk (Nicholas Heháka Sápa) was born on December 1st, 1863. Black passed away August 19th, 1950 at 86 years old. Black Elk was born in Little Powder River, Wyoming, USA.

Black Elk was a holy man and medicine man of the Lakota people. He was a nine-year-old when he started having visions that would make him the holy man who was much revered among his people.

Through a series of events and visions, he gained not only the ability to heal but also mysterious powers when he was in his preteen years. He never told anyone about his visions and it was only as he came into his own as a young man did he let the vision unfold in his life.

As a twelve-year-old, Black Elk was witness to the Battle of the Greasy Grass, one of the most noteworthy battles in the history of the United States. The Lakota beat the white settlers in a famous battle in which Black Elk was involved in collecting clothing, ammunition, and guns from the dying and dead soldiers since he was too young to participate in the actual battle.

Black Elk would grow in spiritual power over the following years, even as his people were driven from their lands and persecuted. Upon completing the Horse Dance ceremony, his hesitation about his purpose disappeared and he began healing and guiding his people despite traditional religion getting banned.

Black Elk married Katie War Bonnet and converted to Catholicism in 1892 and together they had three children, all Catholics. Upon the death of his wife in 1903, Black Elk became a Catholic and took the name Nicholas, even though he still reclaimed a spiritual leader among his people.

The Two Roads is a novel that Black Elk published in 2010. It follows the life and times of Rose, a woman who has some incredible paranormal abilities that she uses under the guidance of Black Elk, her spirit guide. Using his vision for spiritual truth he teaches her how to go after her life's purpose until she achieves a life of joy and peace after uncovering her real identity.

The following year, Black Elk published his second novel The Four Ascents. Following the events of the debut, Black Elk teaches Rose how to walk the tightrope between the real world and the spirit world.
