If you are looking for some great children’s fiction, then there is no one better than Beverly Cleary.

The best character Cleary ever wrote was Ramona Geraldine Quimby. The character started out as a pestering younger sister in a very bizarre family in the Henry Huggins series of novels.

The Ramona series of novels is an interesting collection of works that follow the character Ramona.

What I love about the series in general is how it portrays a wide range of important social issues such as sibling relations, a parent losing their job, marriage, financial instability, divorce, school bullies and the death of a family pet.

Overall I find the series a great way of exploring what it is to grow up in middle class America.

I started following Beverly Clearly because someone told me that she had sold over 90 million copies of her books. I wanted to know what made her so attractive to readers that they had supported her so overwhelmingly.

Then I realized that she was born in 1916 and died at the age of 104. More importantly, she wrote children’s books. Her success makes more sense now. Parents are always looking for well-written books to provide educational entertainment to their children.

Children’s authors are always in demand. Though, I don’t think it is fair to blame Beverly’s success on her genre. I skimmed the first Quimby book, and I could see the ten-year-old version of me obsessing over these books. Beverly has a strong voice that speaks to younger readers.
