People always associate the word ‘Epic’ with science fiction and fantasy. But I think that is a mistake. You can’t call Emma’s story anything other than epic, especially if you followed her journey from the start in ‘A Woman of Substance.’
I don’t recall the 70s and 80s. But I get the sense that epic sagas like the ones Bradford writes were more common back then, books that charted the chronicles of resourceful characters as they fought greed, envy, passion, and everything in between to attain happiness.
We need more stories like this in the romance genres, books driven, not by sex, but by the characters and their believable struggles.
Her books are just too long for me. Very disappointing in character development too.
I’ve only read Ms. Bradford’s first book “A woman of substance,” and I found it rather long but worth the time reading it. While the heroine, Emma, comes across as almost too perfect, I will say that she does show human frailties and isn’t a robot. She makes mistakes and can be a little over the top in her responses, but she also showed what can happen if you take your anger and push, push, push your way to the top. It’s rare that a female character shows such grit and determination, but it works in the story and is amazing to read about. I have a feeling that the writer has probably put a lot of herself in Emma. After all, look at all she has accomplished in her own life! Also, like Emma, she hasn’t let advanced age slow her down. As far as I know, she is 90 years old and still busy with her life. That’s impressive and inspiring.
